Cilymaenllwyd Community Council Audit Notice – 2024 – 2025

Following the success of the Cilymaenllwyd Footpath Restoration Project 2023-24 in the Afon Wenallt valley, Cilymaenllwyd Community Council is preparing to submit a second grant application for the restoration of public footpaths within the community. This initiative aims to improve accessibility and enhance the local walking network for both residents and visitors.

Grant Information

The funding for this project originates from the UK Shared Prosperity Fund, which is distributed through County Councils, including Carmarthenshire County Council, under the Sustainable Communities Fund. The aim of this fund is to strengthen community connections, foster local pride, and deliver both direct and indirect economic benefits.

The grant application deadline is 17th March 2025, with all project work to be completed by January 2026. Grant notifications are expected by May 2025, allowing approximately six months for project completion.

Invitation to Contractors

Cilymaenllwyd Community Council is inviting written quotations from at least three Carmarthenshire-based contractors for the clearance and restoration of public footpaths. The footpaths to be restored are key to reconnecting communities and linking to historical sites, including the prehistoric Cromlech, Gwal-y-Filiast. The proposed restoration will also integrate with the previously completed 2024 footpath project.

Scope of Work:

• Clearing overgrowth and fallen trees
• Restoring drainage ditches
• Repairing or installing fencing
• Installing signage where needed
• Assembling stiles and installing gates
• Constructing stream and ditch crossings
• Creating resting areas where appropriate

• 52/6/1 in Efailwen
• 52/5/2 in Efailwen
• 4/12/2 in Ffynnonwen area
• 4/20/3 leading to Dolwilym bridge

Join us for a special Community Walk on Saturday, 19th October 2024

We are excited to invite the community to the official opening of the Cilymaenllwyd Footpath Restoration Project! This event marks the culmination of months of work to reconnect our local footpaths, enhance outdoor spaces, and celebrate the natural beauty of our area.

When:

Saturday, 19th October 2024
Meet at 1pm at the Login Calfaria Chapel car park (parking available for walkers)

Walk details:

This community walk will take us from Login through Rhosfach and Efailwen and will cover approximately 4 miles (round trip), with an option for participants to walk just one way (either to or from Bar Beca). If you choose not to walk, you are warmly invited to join at Bar Beca at 3pm, where refreshments will be provided, and drinks available for purchase.

The walk will follow a section of the Landsker Borderlands Trail and then onto the newly restored footpaths. This is a wonderful opportunity to explore the Afon Wenallt valley, rich in biodiversity and featuring ancient woodland and temperate rainforest-like habitats. We will cross the river Wenallt twice—once by stepping stones and once over a newly built wooden bridge, a special addition constructed for this project.

Some sections of the walk may involve muddy terrain, stiles, and fields that could contain sheep, cattle, or goats, so it it essential to follow the Countryside Code.

• Explore the beautiful Cilymaenllwyd footpaths
• Immerse yourself in ancient woodlands, rich in flora and fauna
• Enjoy the company of fellow walkers and community members
• Opportunity to thank landowners and contractors for their contributions
• Refreshments at Bar Beca from 3pm

Important information:

• Well-behaved dogs are welcome to join!
• Please wear suitable footwear and clothing for our beautiful Welsh weather
• The valley has some steep inclines, but paths are generally wide and level

This project, run by Cilymaenllwyd Community Council, was made possible through collaboration with Carmarthenshire County Council, **Ramblers Cymru, and other local partners. Funding was secured through the Sustainable Communities Grant via Levelling Up Funding. Thanks to the hard work of local landowners, volunteers, and our contractor, previously impassable public rights of way have been restored and enhanced for the benefit of all.

The LDP sets out proposals and policies for the future use of all land within the County and covers a period of 15 years.

Another opportunity to learn how to identify wildlife during October half-term.

Join us at the Cardi Bach Heritage Centre, Login for a free, fun and educational experience on Saturday 26^th October 2024 from 1pm – 4pm. You’ll learn how to identify different species of wildlife in their natural habitat.

This hands-on workshop is running in collaboration with WWBIC and Cilymaenllwyd footpath restoration project, and will be led by local ecologist Carys May, West Wales Biodiversity Information Centre (WWBIC).

We will be walking outdoors on local quiet roads and footpaths.

Please wear appropriate footwear and clothing to cope with our lovely Welsh weather.

Refreshments will be available on the day and need to be booked in advance, £4 cash on the day.

Would you like to join our monthly walks in our local area?

We are an informal walking group that walks on our local footpaths and quiet roads.

Would you like to suggest an area to walk or would you like to recommend a walk that we could do?

We usually walk around 5 miles or so, but they can be longer or shorter.

We can stop along the way to rest and use any refreshments we have carried.

Why not join us for an exciting day of wildlife identifying and recording with West Wales Biodiversity Information Centre at the Cardi Bach Heritage Centre, Login on Wednesday 24 July 2024 from 10am – 3pm.

This in-person event is perfect for anyone interested in learning more about the incredible wildlife around us. You’ll have the opportunity to explore and discover various techniques for recording wildlife in your local area.

• Bring a notebook and a pen/pencil to record anything useful
• Come equipped with suitable clothing, and sturdy shoes for the wonderful, variable Welsh weather! We may go out for a walk to record what we can find in the area
• Come prepared and download our App or sign up on the website so you can get stuck into recording on the day
• Refreshments available for £3
• All welcome. Children to be accompanied by adults

Cilymaenllwyd Community Council Audit Notice – 2023 – 2024

Ever wish you knew how to navigate our local area or Welsh landscapes?

Whether you’re an avid rambler or a casual stroller, navigation skills are essential to safe and fun walking adventures!

Come along to our FREE basic navigation session where Amy Goodwin, the Carmarthenshire Regional Officer for Ramblers Cymru will guide you through how to read a map. 

Amy will also explain the Pathways survey project being undertaken in Carmarthenshire by volunteers.

The event is being held at Cardi Bach Heritage Centre in Login, Monday 8th July 1.00pm – 3.30pm.

Please wear appropriate clothing and footwear as we may put into practice what we have learned with a short local walk.
